While filmmaker Aanand L Rai is known for collaborating with many superstars such as Dhanush, Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, he continued to experiment with storytelling rather than following any formula of commercial Bollywood films.
In a talk with IANS, Aanand shares why he prefers to believe in storytelling over formula, and why a movie like Zero starring one of the biggest superstars of Bollywood Shah Rukh Khan is a learning for him, not a failure.
When asked how he plans to include superstars for his projects, Aanand L Rai told IANS: “First, by looking at them as talented actors and not as superstars… about casting from a commercial perspective, like south Dhanush (Indian) Let’s bring Akshay sir from Hindi and Hindi so that when the movie comes out, both fans will gather at the theater to watch a movie, so I’m reconciled on a story.
Are Hrithik Roshan and Karan Johar Joining Forces for K3G Director’s First Big-Budget Action Movie?
Aanand L Rai continued, “Dhanush and Akshay sir, who are both superstars, great luck for me; but above all they are good actors and perfect for the characters they play on screen. It’s been the same process for every movie I’ve made. Maybe that’s why my films are more about how interesting and experimental the story is than about box office success. The work of a movie is unpredictable but what I can suggest is an original story. That’s all I’m trying to do.”
However, when a superstar like Aanand and a successful filmmaker come together for a project, it would not be wrong to assume that the success of the film is expected. But that was not the result of the movie ‘Zero’ starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma.
Does the pressure to deliver a successful movie increase when superstars join us?
Aanand L Rai said, “I want to put my thoughts on the table. Look, it’s one thing to have an expectation from the audience, another thing is how I deal with it as a director. I guess if I wasn’t prepared to deal with that extra pressure then I shouldn’t have signed up for such a big project.
“Yes, I was working with Shah Rukh, one of our country’s biggest superstars. Making the movie was an experience and I’m proud that it’s one of the original movies, an original story. Yes, I got the pressure of Khan’s stardom that I shouldn’t have. But ‘Zero’ is for me It’s a learning, not a failure. I knew how to take off, I didn’t know how to land!” Aanand L Rai concluded.
His next directorial work is Raksha Bandhan starring Akshay Kumar. The shooting of the movie has been completed.
